A few weeks ago, on Friday the 11th of November and during the following few days, Paul enjoyed a number of birthday celebrations. These were hosted by his close family and office colleagues. By all accounts they were joyous occasions which Paul thoroughly enjoyed. Precious moments shared with those who were closest to him. For most of us, who messaged or called to pass on our greetings, we did so in the normal human assumption that we would see him again soon. Sadly this was not to be. Only a few days later, Paul the good and faithful servant, had been called home to receive his crown and be with his Saviour and Lord for eternity.
During a time of shared grief and reflection Paul’s devoted and beloved wife, Anne, subsequently described him as “magnificent”. I’m not sure that there is a single adjective which more completely encapsulates Paul.
The tributes paid to Paul in the press and on social media platforms highlighted the thousands of lives, across the world, that he had positively impacted. He had served as the Chief Executive Officer of Mission Africa since 2005 with humble dedication. To the role he brought an unparalleled level of knowledge of African history, culture and religion. This knowledge was only surpassed by his love for the African people and it was his love for them that drove him to strive to share the gospel with them; that which is “of first importance”.
In God’s wisdom, we are all unique; but Paul was more unique than most. None of us is irreplaceable; but there will never be another Paul. In many ways Paul Bailie’s name was synonymous with Mission Africa. Consequently it is difficult to imagine what the next few years will be like without him. However, as Paul himself would have said, “we must bow the knee”. God is sovereign and His ways are perfect. From Samuel Bill in 1887 to Rev. Dr. Paul Bailie in 2022 those involved in the work of The Qua Iboe Fellowship / Mission Africa have sought to do God’s work for His glory. In 2023 and beyond we must prayerfully seek wisdom and guidance to do the same.
